A few months ago, I decided to dedicate a vacation to improving my horseback riding and refreshing my basic Spanish. I had taken Spanish lessons years ago and was already taking riding classes, but it was time to level up. Living Your Spanish offered the perfect combination of the two, plus the chance to step off the beaten path and visit a small town with a strong gaucho tradition.
I live in Texas but am originally European, so I had some reservations about traveling alone to a foreign country. After speaking with Patricia, though, I felt much more at ease. In hindsight, San Antonio de Areco—and even Buenos Aires, which I visited for a few days afterward—felt quite safe. Patricia was helpful with everything: answering my questions during the planning stage, customizing the stay around my priorities, arranging transportation from Buenos Aires, organizing the riding activities, and offering suggestions for food and shopping once I arrived.
I arrived in San Antonio de Areco in late August and had a wonderful time. No review can fully capture the experience because it exceeded my expectations. I had daily Spanish lessons with Patricia and spent my afternoons with Male at her farm, La Dominga. The Spanish lessons refreshed what I had learned in the past and gave me a solid foundation to build on. I also learned to canter on one of the best horses I have ever ridden. But the trip was so much more than lessons and riding.
My Spanish classes took place in Patricia's lovely home over drinking mate. She also took me to local shops and traditional restaurants where I could see how people live and practice the language in real settings. At the farm, Male let me ride her favorite horse, Rosi. Both she and Rosi were patient as I gained the confidence to canter. The farm itself felt like a small paradise, with dogs and chickens wandering around while I practiced. Male took me on long cabalgatas to see her cattle and we also rode from the farm into the town.
Most importantly, while I was there I felt I was with friends living in the town. San Antonio de Areco is close to Buenos Aires, yet it has its own distinct character and pace - it exists in a bubble.
